A short Condor flight next took the research tourists to the land of Israel, where they visited Jerusalem. They made their way to an inordinately large museum in front of which was carved on a stone plaque in German: Hall of Blood Atonement.
âWhat does blood atonement mean?â Logan asked.
âIt is a belief that has been shared by every culture throughout history until relatively recent times,â Ina said. âIt is the belief that one can atone for their sins to God by providing blood sacrifice. Or, to put another way, they had to please their gods by killing things.â
âI donât really want to see this stuff again,â Logan said.
âWe have to,â Ina insisted. âWe need a better understanding of what motivated these behaviors. Itâs all linked to our dreams somehow⦠I know it.â
They walked into the museum. It was basically a single, long, voluminous corridor, filled with different stone and metal sculptures, along with three-dimensional holographic images.
The group found out many things they already knew about sacrifice. What they werenât so aware of is how human sacrifice was still going on in the 21st Century, up until the Apex âadministrationâ of Earth, as the guide said.
One of the stories that stood out to the visitors was that of the African albinos. These were people who were ethnically Sub-Saharan, what was conventionally referred to as black, however their skin, eyes and hair had no pigments, as was the case with all albinos.
The albinos were mightily feared by many Africans. They were also sought after, for their mysterious appearance was thought to be indicative of special powers. Witch doctors of the area often demanded that their clients go out and kill an albino, to bring back their parts to be used for spells. Even more preferable was to bring back the live albino person, to be sacrificed on the altar.
The practice of human sacrifice was brought to the New World and was widespread in the Caribbean, particularly Haiti, accounting for the deaths of thousands of people a year. Though headed under differing namesâ Santeria, Palo Moyombe, Vodouâ the themes and deities were more or less the same.
Their religious idols bore little similarity in appearance and character to the Minotaur, though bulls were often sacrificed in these rights, the decapitated heads held aloft, above the priest, which Logan found to be similar in abstract concept to the Minotaur. While human sacrifice was systemic within these African and Caribbean religions, more often than not it was animals that were sacrificed, their blood thought to be suitable enough for most potions and incantations.
Up until the Apex conquest of Earth, dozens of people were killed every year in Europe and North America, particularly the United States, by so-called âSatanists.â Their religion was completely decentralized and the only underlying theme was the belief in the power of the individual, not God. In so many ways, the Satanists saw themselves as evolving until they became gods.
Part of expressing their godliness was shown through their ability to take life. Not
